Teresa VanHoose, Mother of Marlana VanHoose

My name is Teresa VanHoose and my daughter Marlana was a student of Laura’s. Some people have a hard time communicating with Marlana, therefore they won’t have anything to do with her. Marlana has many special abilities (Some may call it disabilities) especially when it comes to music. Marlana is totally blind with some other issues. When we met Laura, she talked to Marlana like she does with anyone. Laura was very nice and eager to give us information about her choirs in which Marlana was a part of. Laura taught her many voice techniques, stage presence and the proper ways to sing with others. Marlana absolutely loved participating in these choirs and learned so much!! These choirs were one of the highlights of Marlana’s career!!

Laura, I cant thank you enough for everything you did for me. Who knew that when you recommended that Frank Sinatra song years ago it would be the one I won with!

Laura, Alex so much from you. From a mom’s perspective, I can say that I never worried about dropping him off and coming back later. You were and are such a sweetheart to be around. Alex learned self confidence and voice techniques that he has carried with him for years. Thank you for everything.

I started taking voice lessons from Laura at a young age. I was on her waiting list for a couple of years before I could get lessons with her and when I did, I was beyond excited. She always made learning fun and mixed in learning vocal techniques with fun songs. I always looked forward to my lesson with Laura every single week. I grew up in lessons with Laura and then went on to become a member of her community choir, her vocal group, Serenade, and eventually the Big Sandy Singers. Some of my fondest memories of performing include Laura and I am forever grateful for the time I was blessed to spend learning from her. Not only did she teach me how to sing, she was always a positive influence and helped me grow into the person I am today. Thank you, Laura, for always making lessons fun and just being you!

I don’t even know how many of my childhood years I spent with Laura, but I loved every one of my lessons. Laura was always so uplifting and positive. She made me feel good about myself when I sang, which was not an easy thing to do! When I was 7 years old, I got on a stage at the Mountain Arts Center and sang for strangers. Having the courage to do that is a big thing, and with Laura, I did it and loved it for years. She’s one of the best I’ve ever met!

Where do I start? Laura has been a mentor to me musically and other wise for the better part of my life. I started vocal lessons with her around the age of 10 or 11. She and Clayton Case are due nearly all of the credit for everything I’ve been blessed to have done with music. From the Kentucky Opry to being able to keep the cost of college to a minimum with the College Vocal Scholarship. her teaching and friendship have presented me with opportunities that I look back on now and just have to thank God for. Thanks Laura, I love you..

I enjoyed Mrs. Laura’s voice lessons very much. She made it very fun for us and I never felt nervous or uncomfortable in her voice lessons. I learned so much from Mrs. Laura’s voice lessons. She taught me very good techniques on how to control my voice and she taught me the best warm-ups that I still use today. If it wasn’t for Mrs. Laura, I wouldn’t have been as good of a singer as I am today. I miss her so much.
